The DALZATE brand was born at Urtubie castle on the Basque Coast, in the immediate vicinity of Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
Its cosmetics, respectful of the criteria of the natural cosmetics, use in particular the lemon scented verbena. This plant was imported from South America (Argentina and Peru) in the 19 th century by Basque immigrants. Our oceanic climate suits this plant and it has since been used in soothing or digestive infusions. It was at the end of the 20th century that the virtues of the lemon verbena were used to create cosmetic products.
Some history…
Urtubie Castle is a fortified castle constructed in the 14th century and has been enlarged in the 16th and 18th centuries. King Louis XI spent some days in the castle in 1463 and Louis XIV has raised the property into viscounty in 1654.
Since its construction, the castle has played the role of protecting the people in the area, but also of healing them. The squires and their herbalists used medicinal plants to help the sick. Today, part of the castle’s park is reserved to the “garden of simples” and the orangery hosts an exhibition on the healing powers of plants.
